Over the last twenty years the fight against homophobia, bifobia and transfobia has had significant successes. The repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"; the end of "Sodomy" laws some states in the United States of America had; the growing public acceptance of same-sex marriage or civil unions; and the growing number of countries that allow same-sex couples to adopt are all part of that.
People are waking up to the fact that LGBT people are exactly that, people! They are becoming aware that the main (and maybe only) difference between them and these people is their sexual orientation.
Barriers are being broken, misconceptions are being left behind. Indeed, Societies are now progressing. Although there are still many misconceptions, although there is still a lot of prejudice, it is important that both LGBT communities and Straight Alies acknowledge the important steps that the acceptance of LGBT rights and equality have had.
Today, more than ever, these issues are being talked about, discussed, debated by everyone.
It is important that LGBT communities and Straight Alies keep walking the walk. Despite all that has been achieved, there's a need to aim higher. We must stop the misconceptions for good; we must fight prejudice. Only when these two "enemies" are beaten will justice have prevailed and will the discrimination based on sexual orientation end. So, I leave you with this thought: Much has been achieved, but this is only the beginning.
We must walk the walk, because though we're closer, we are not yet there.
Yours trully, Mike
